The Environmental Projection Agency, Fish and Wildlife, Champaign County Engineering Office and Champaign County Commissioners should get a load of what Mr. Kenneth Wooten has been up to in Champaign county. This is a prefect example of urban sprawl, unsustainable development practice and the environmental destruction that often occurs on the fringes of rural areas in America.

  • Redirection of water onto adjacent land
  • Disruption of public infrastructure
  • Disruption of public amenity
  • Public endangerment (due to flooding, icing, other conditions)
  • Intentional damage to nearby natural wetlands

The high water sign and flamingo kindly placed in the lake that formed at the front of the new dwelling exemplify the failure of planning and development policies and lack of enforcement in Champaign County. Extensive flooding occurred actively flowing directly over South Dugan Road and more significantly along South Dugan to ShortCut Road where water stood at 1.5 to 2 ft deep on adjacent properties causing a small structure to be partially submerged and nearly flooding a three-way intersection.

The American Farmland Trust along with hundreds of voters recently crowned the Champaign County Farmers’ Market as one of America’s four favorite farmers’ markets in America with less than 30-35 registered vendors! Taking place on a street located directly behind the city administrative building, the community gathers on a weekly basis adding character to the city, encouraging cultural development and economic activity. Urban artwork produced by local students also contributes character and interest to this transitional space within the urban fabric of Urbana, Ohio.

The following are a few of the key factors facilitating the establishment of the market, add value and character to the city and local community!

    • Communication between city, organization, local agriculturalists
    • Establishment of innovative flexible use policies
    • Urban art (created through a project involving local school children)
